How much is your milk? Our Proper milk is £3 per litre before postage and packaging
How much is P&P? P&P varies depending on the size of your order, please see here for P&P prices per litre. Delivery may seem expensive (£11 up to 15 litres) but milk is heavy/bulky and we use a very reliable overnight courier. Many customers buy in bulk and freeze the milk to save on P&P (packaging is on average £5 per box of thermal but environmentally sensitive Wool Cool fleece and cardboard) so on average shipping plus packaging for one box of milk is £15.
Do you deliver on Saturdays? We do! We ship Proper Milk Tuesday-Saturday, however there is an extra postage charge for Saturdays. At the checkout just select 'Saturday delivery' and we'll do the rest N.B.Your order needs to be in before 10am on Friday to ensure Saturday delivery. If you have a preference for any other day of the week that you would like your milk to be delivered, please state in the notes of your order. It is possible for your milk to arrive the very next morning after making your order even before you receive confirmation from us.
Do you ship to the outer reaches of Scotland/Isles/Northern Ireland? We do! We ship our Proper Milk throughout the whole of the UK. Outlying/extended areas may be subject to a higher delivery charge and may take two days to arrive, so please contact us here before placing your order.
Special instructions for delivery, I have changed my address etc – Please state clearly in the notes of your order any instructions for delivery and give a safe place to leave your box of milk if you are out when delivery is made. Similarly add 'Change of address' or 'updated details' if necessary, to make sure we don't miss anything. If you are at all concerned after booking, please contact us here.
I would like to order more than 40 litres? Please contact us here before placing your order, so we can calculate shipping costs and ensure we are able to complete your order.
Can I set up a regular order? Yes you can, contact us here with all your details and we'll set it up.
For delayed or failed deliveries please go to Terms and conditions at the bottom of pages
Can I freeze the milk? Yes you can, many of our online customers buy in bulk and swear by freezing their milk, saving on P&P
Not in the shop? We sometimes have cream, skimmed milk and chocolate milk available to buy, but if it’s not showing up in the shop it's currently unavailable. We usually post on our social media when they’re back, so keep an eye on us there. We also sometimes have frozen milk available at £2 per litre, contact us here if you would like some.
Do you make butter? Not at the moment, but we’re hoping to soon! Keep an eye on the shop and our social media for updates.
What packaging do you use? Your Proper milk is packed & delivered by overnight courier in thermal & environmentally sensitive WoolCool (multi-re-useable & compostable) sheeps wool lined cardboard boxes with ice. This keeps things cool enough for at least 48hrs even in the warmer weather.
What about the plastic? Although our regular customers bring in their own glass bottles which they wash and sterilise themselves, we do use plastic and yes of course we do hate it. We are a tiny, tiny business currently reliant on plastic, we have done our research and so far have found no sustainable alternative to our plastic bottles. To make the change to glass we'd need to spend a huge amount of money (which of course we don't have). If you do really feel strongly about our plastic consumption then maybe you could help us make the change to glass bottles by contributing, why not make a donation? See below.
BTW the bottles and labels are recyclable please re-use or recycle.....
.....On a personal level......As a family and household I have been anti plastic long before my kids were born over 30 years ago, in those days I was even seen as a bit of a strange one, taking excessive plastics back to the shop either as a protest or to re-use. But as a tiny business with practically zero resources I'm afraid we are single-use-plastic-trapped! Also we do not have enough local customers to buy milk directly from the farm-gate (bringing their own washed and sterilised re-usable containers)*, so we rely heavily on online sales shipping by courier all over the UK. Shipping/carrying glass bottles means more weight, more packaging to prevent breakages and to get an initial ecological benefit the glass bottles will need to be re-used several times over to match the energy consumption of manufacturing a plastic bottle, this in turn means the customer would have to wash and sterilise their bottles before packing and shipping them back. We then have to make sure the bottles are sterile and are not chipped or cracked before refilling as the milk police have made it quite clear that if there are any outbreaks of food poisoning due to the re-use of a contaminated glass bottle the onus is on us (remember this is raw milk and the Food Standards Agency are quite keen to ban raw milk).
Our bottles and labels are recyclable, the customer must ensure they re-use or recycle their containers. If only the public would target big business with big profits who are in a position to make the difference rather than tiny micro businesses like ours who are only just washing our face.
It is a very complex issue and for such a tiny business it's a bit of a minefield, unfortunately there is no simple single solution. However we do feel our regenerative farming methods go a long way to outweigh the negatives of our plastic usage.
Do you sell beef? Yes! Our Gold-Top Jersey Beef is highly sought after. The purely-pasture-fed two year old steers are the boys raised by their own mothers/the milking cows, who are weaned at about 10 months old. The boys are raised on grass with the rest of the herd until about 2yrs old, please go to our The CAFD Method page for more detail.. The beef is dry air aged and hung for 3 weeks. It has a lovely creamy yellow fat covering which is indicative of purely grass feeding and the Jersey breed. The beef is cut and individually packaged in packs suitable for the average household or a single person. For a beef price list and to see what is available please go to our contact page here.
Are you organic/do you use antibiotics We are not 'certified' by an organic certifying body or any other certifying body, we are proudly 'unsigned' because we feel these certifying bodies do not do our own high standards or methods justice and we cannot be spending any more time and energy ticking even more boxes than we already have to by law, all we want to do is to concentrate on the welfare and happiness of our precious animals and keeping our raw milk safe, clean and healthy. Our customers are our certifying body and just to reassure you... Our beautiful Jersey cows are fed a natural diet and that means: No grain, no cereal, no soya, no GMOs' – just grass/pasture. No routine use of antibiotics, wormers' or chemicals on our farm. Our cows are truly Purely Pasture Fed and of course we don't use chemical fertilizer or sprays where our cows graze.
Is raw milk safe? No food can be guaranteed 100% safe but we feel you are more likely to suffer from food poisoning by eating a lettuce leaf bought from a supermarket than you are from drinking our beautiful milk. As registered raw milk producers we have to comply with the law and follow the rules and regulations of the FSA (Food Standards Agency) we are regularly inspected by the milk police who take samples of our milk away for testing every quarter and we do our own lab tests. Luckily we are in a low bTB (bovine tuberculosis) risk area (Suffolk) but, by law, because we produce raw drinking milk our cows have to be tested as if we were in a high risk zone (which is annoying for the cows but it's reassuring for us and our customers) By law all raw drinking milk producers have to carry this health warning on the container "This milk has not been heat treated and therefore may contain organisms harmful to health".
Can I buy raw milk and sell it from my shop or cafe? No! The law states that Raw milk is NOT FOR RESALE unless you are registered as a distributor
Do you take volunteers/trainees? Yes, at The CAFD We are delighted to find there are more and more enlightened, compassionate consumers who share our desire to make the world a better place for dairy cows. We also train and help other would be calf-at-footers set up their own Cow-Kind, Calf-friendly micro-diaries and youngsters/work experience are always welcome for training and preparation for entry into a brave new world of responsible, regenerative and ethical farming. Contact us here to organise.
